Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New Zealand on Thursday, marking the final leg of his three-nation tour that also included visits to Indonesia and Australia. The visit is aimed at bolstering India's strategic partnerships in the region.
Key Objectives of the Visit
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi said his visits to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand will further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, as well as its outlook towards a free and open Indo-Pacific. The MAHASAGAR Vision, which stands for Maritime Heritage, Security, and Growth, emphasizes cooperation in the maritime domain.
Itinerary and Meetings
During his stay in New Zealand, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Chris Hipkins. The discussions are expected to cover trade, defense, and cultural exchanges. The two leaders will also explore ways to enhance cooperation in renewable energy and technology sectors.
Significance of the Tour
The three-nation tour underscores India's growing engagement with the Indo-Pacific region. The Act East Policy, launched in 2014, aims to promote economic cooperation, cultural ties, and strategic relationships with countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The MAHASAGAR Vision, announced in 2023, focuses on maritime security and sustainable development.
PM Modi's visit to New Zealand is the first by an Indian prime minister in over a decade, highlighting the importance India places on its relationship with Wellington. The two countries have traditionally enjoyed warm relations, with cooperation in areas such as education, tourism, and agriculture.
Expected Outcomes
Analysts expect the visit to result in several bilateral agreements, including a possible memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation and a framework for enhanced trade ties. India and New Zealand are also likely to discuss regional security issues, including the situation in the South China Sea and the Pacific Islands.
The visit comes at a time when both countries are looking to diversify their partnerships amid shifting global dynamics. New Zealand has been strengthening its ties with India as part of its broader engagement with Asia.
