PM Modi Renames Airport After Guru Ravidas, Honors Dera Head

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the revered spiritual figure Guru Ravidas on his 649th birth anniversary, visiting the prominent Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar, Punjab. In a significant gesture, the Prime Minister unveiled the new name of Adampur airport as Sri Guru Ravidass Maharaj Ji Airport, Adampur, linking this action to his government's broader vision of egalitarianism and social justice.

Emphasis on Equality and Social Reform

Addressing a gathering at the dera, PM Modi emphasized that the teachings of Guru Ravidas, which champion equality and dignity for all, have been a driving force behind his government's agenda. He stated that these ideals are central to building a Viksit Bharat where every individual receives respect and opportunity. The Prime Minister highlighted that Ravidas's birth anniversary is now commemorated at a national level, with many states officially recognizing it, reflecting the government's commitment to honoring the saint's legacy.

Outreach to Ravidassia Community

Modi's visit is seen as a strategic outreach to the Ravidassia community, which has a substantial presence in Punjab and among other Dalit and disadvantaged groups across India. Dalits constitute approximately 32% of voters in Punjab, with an even higher influence in the Doaba region where the dera is located. The Prime Minister's efforts aim to deepen the BJP's connection with Scheduled Castes, a key demographic in the state's political landscape.

Honors and Infrastructure Developments

During the event, PM Modi touched the feet of Dera Sachkhand Ballan's spiritual head, Sant Niranjan Dass, in a show of respect, acknowledging his recent Padma Shri award for welfare contributions in education and health. Additionally, the Prime Minister virtually inaugurated the terminal building at Halwara airport in Ludhiana, underscoring the government's focus on infrastructure development in the region.

Symbolic Alignment with Union Budget

Linking these actions to the Union Budget, Modi noted that it was presented on Guru Ravidas Jayanti as a symbolic alignment with the saint's vision of Begumpura—a land of equality and dignity. He connected this to the renaming of the Ayodhya airport after Maharishi Valmiki, portraying such initiatives as part of a consistent effort to promote social harmony and inclusivity.

Political and Community Reactions

Senior BJP leader Avinash Chander, who conducted the event, praised Sant Niranjan Dass for preventing conversions to Christianity in the region, highlighting the dera head's influence. A hoarding at the venue marked the 17th anniversary of the foundation of the Ravidasia religion, which was established in 2010 with a separate scripture, Amrit Bani Sri Guru Ravidas. The dera has previously requested the inclusion of this new religion in the Census, reflecting ongoing community aspirations.

Presence of Political Leaders

The event saw the attendance of notable political figures, including former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who expressed gratitude for the airport renaming and Padma Shri award. BJP Punjab president Sunil Jakhar, working president Ashwani Sharma, and National Commission for Minorities Chairman Iqbal Singh Lalpura were also present, indicating broad political support for the initiatives.

PM Modi concluded by expressing confidence that these efforts would strengthen societal roots, fostering unity and progress in line with Guru Ravidas's enduring message of equality and respect for all.
