Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the restoration of the revered Somnath Temple in Gujarat after 75 years gives a civilisational message to the entire nation. Addressing a gathering at the temple premises on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of its restoration, Modi emphasised that the temple symbolises India's unbroken cultural heritage and resilience.
Historical Significance of Somnath Temple
The Somnath Temple, located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Gujarat, is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history, most notably by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1025 AD. The temple was restored after India's independence, with the reconstruction completed in 1951 under the guidance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
PM Modi's Address
Speaking at the event, Modi said, "Somnath gives us a civilisational message. It tells us that no matter how many times our temples are attacked, our faith remains unshaken." He also paid tribute to Sardar Patel for his role in the temple's restoration, calling it a symbol of India's cultural resurgence.
- The temple's restoration was a major project initiated by the Government of India after independence.
- It was rebuilt in the Chalukya style of architecture, using sandstone and marble.
- The temple attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists every year.
Cultural and Spiritual Impact
Modi further noted that the temple is not just a place of worship but a testament to India's ancient civilisation. He said, "The Somnath Temple stands as a beacon of our spiritual heritage and a reminder of our duty to preserve it for future generations." The event was attended by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and other dignitaries.
75 Years of Restoration
The 75th anniversary of the restoration was celebrated with various cultural programmes and rituals. The temple trust also announced plans for further development of the surrounding area to enhance the experience of devotees. Modi concluded his speech by urging the nation to draw inspiration from the temple's history and work towards building a strong and prosperous India.
