Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a series of advisories as intense heatwave conditions grip various parts of India. In a message shared on social media, Modi highlighted the severity of the soaring temperatures and urged citizens to adopt necessary precautions to stay safe.
Key Precautions Advised by PM Modi
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of staying hydrated. He recommended that people carry water whenever they step outside and also offer water to those in need. 'This heat is harsh on all of us, and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible. Please stay hydrated, keep water with you when stepping out. Offer a glass of water to…,' Modi posted on May 27, 2026.
Care for the Elderly
Modi also stressed the need to check on elderly family members and loved ones during this challenging period. 'Whenever possible, call and check on elderly parents, grandparents and loved ones during this heatwave. Remind them to stay hydrated, avoid stepping out in peak afternoon hours and take rest whenever possible,' he added in a subsequent post.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued guidelines for heatwave conditions, advising people to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours (12 PM to 3 PM), wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and use umbrellas or hats when outdoors. Authorities have set up cooling centers in several cities and are distributing water and oral rehydration salts (ORS) in vulnerable areas.
Heatwaves have become a recurring challenge in India, particularly during the pre-monsoon months. High temperatures can lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are at higher risk. Medical experts recommend consuming plenty of fluids, avoiding strenuous activities, and staying in shaded or air-conditioned environments as much as possible.
As the country grapples with this extreme weather, PM Modi's appeal serves as a timely reminder for collective action and community support to mitigate the impact of the heatwave.
