PM Modi Urges Citizens to Vote, Honour Youth on Constitution Day
PM Modi's Constitution Day Call: Vote, Empower Youth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked Constitution Day on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, by issuing an open letter to the nation, calling upon every citizen to actively participate in strengthening Indian democracy by exercising their fundamental right to vote. He emphasized that this sacred duty is pivotal for the nation's progress.

Recalling a Historic Legacy and a Past Oversight

In his letter, the Prime Minister reflected on the historic adoption of the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949. He noted that in 2015, his government officially declared this date as Constitution Day to properly honour the foundational document of the world's largest democracy. However, PM Modi also drew a contrast with the past, pointing out that the Constitution did not receive the national-level attention it deserved when it completed 60 years in 2010.

He recounted his personal initiative from that time, sharing, "To express our collective gratitude and commitment to the Constitution, we organised a 'Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra' in Gujarat. Our Constitution was placed on an elephant and I, along with several other people from different walks of life, had the honour of being part of the procession."

A Call to Action: Empowering First-Time Voters

The core of PM Modi's message was a clarion call for civic participation. He stressed that the right to vote is a powerful gift from the Constitution and that citizens must never miss the opportunity to cast their ballot in national, state, and local elections.

To institutionalize this spirit, he proposed a novel idea for the nation's educational institutions. He suggested that schools and colleges celebrate Constitution Day by holding special ceremonies to honour and celebrate youngsters who are turning 18 and becoming first-time voters. This, he expressed, would make young adults feel they are not just students but active participants in the process of nation-building, thereby strengthening democratic values and securing the nation's future.

Duties as the Foundation for a Developed India

Echoing Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy, the Prime Minister highlighted that rights flow from the diligent performance of duties. He underscored that fulfilling one's duties is the very foundation for social and economic progress.

"Inspired by this, as we move forward to realise the dream of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), we must always place our duties towards our nation foremost in our minds," PM Modi wrote. He reminded the nation that the policies and decisions made today will shape the lives of generations to come.

In a separate post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister paid tribute to the framers of the Constitution, stating that their vision continues to motivate the country in its pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat. He reiterated that while the Constitution empowers citizens with rights, it also reminds them of their duties, which form the bedrock of a strong democracy.
