Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a significant roadshow in Puducherry on Friday, campaigning for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates just five days before the Union territory heads to the polls on April 9. Modi arrived at Puducherry airport at 4:15 PM and proceeded to the Atithi signal, where the roadshow commenced. He was warmly greeted by All India NR Congress (AINRC) founder and Chief Minister N Rangasamy, Home Minister A Namassivayam of the BJP, and other BJP functionaries. Hundreds of enthusiastic supporters lined both sides of the road, eager to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister.
The roadshow, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, covered over one kilometer and concluded at the Raja theatre signal. Throughout the event, Modi waved to the crowds, who showered his vehicle with flowers and raised slogans in support of the NDA. The tiny tourist town was placed under a massive security blanket to ensure safety during the visit.
Strategic Importance for NDA
This roadshow is seen as a critical strategic move to galvanize NDA cadres and voters ahead of the elections. It is expected to help the alliance win a majority of seats, including the high-profile Thattanchavady constituency. Modi's visit follows his recent interaction with party cadres on Monday, where he urged them to work at the grassroots level and conduct door-to-door campaigns to garner more votes.
During that interaction, Modi emphasized the importance of meeting every single voter and enlightening them on the alliance's development vision for Puducherry. He highlighted the contrast between the NDA's plans and the previous Congress government's record.

In his last visit to Puducherry on March 1, Modi strongly criticized the Congress, accusing the former government of political instability, corruption, crime, and the suffering of the poor. He alleged that Congress had turned Puducherry into an "ATM for one family that sits in Delhi" and that Congress and DMK had become speed-breakers in the region's development journey.
Modi warned against returning to an era of corruption and crime, expressing confidence that the people of Puducherry do not desire such a scenario. The political landscape in Puducherry features AINRC leading the NDA, contesting in 16 seats in the 30-member assembly, while BJP is contesting in 10 seats, and AIADMK and LJK two each.
Opposition Dynamics
On the opposition side, Congress is contesting from 16 seats and DMK from 14. DMK had allotted one seat to VCK from its quota, but VCK rejected the offer and decided to contest independently from three constituencies. This fragmentation could potentially impact the opposition's cohesion in the elections.
