Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan led a significant tribute to India's freedom fighters in Sambalpur, Odisha, on Sunday, a day before the nation observes Shaheed Diwas. The minister participated in a solemn tricolour march at the historic site of Kudopali, a land renowned for its valour in the freedom struggle.
Inauguration of a Commemorative Gateway
Earlier in the day, Pradhan inaugurated a commemorative gateway at Sindurpank Square on National Highway-53, which forms part of the vital Kolkata-Mumbai route. This structure has been built as a lasting tribute to the sacrifice of freedom fighter Veer Chhabila Sai and 56 other martyrs who gave their lives fighting against British colonial rule.
The architectural design of the gateway is rich with symbolism. It prominently features a flaming torch, representing the eternal flame of sacrifice, and the Ashoka Chakra, a national emblem of truth and righteousness. The inclusion of the Ashoka Pillar underscores the pillars of justice and peace. Uniquely, the gateway also incorporates traditional Sambalpuri Ikat motifs, beautifully weaving the region's cultural heritage into the narrative of national pride and courage.
Tricolour March and Tributes at Kudopali
Following the inauguration ceremony, the Union Minister flagged off the tricolour march from the premises of Shaheed Kudopali Primary School. The march, filled with patriotic fervour, proceeded towards the Shaheed Smruti battlefield site, retracing the steps of the heroes it aimed to honour.
At the culmination of the march, Dharmendra Pradhan paid his heartfelt respects by offering floral tributes at the Kudopali Martyrs’ Pillar. This act served as a poignant reminder of the supreme sacrifices made by countless individuals for India's independence.

The events held in Sambalpur district carry profound significance as they directly precede Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs' Day), observed annually on March 23rd. This day is dedicated to remembering and honouring the courage and sacrifice of India's freedom fighters. By leading the march and inaugurating the memorial gateway, the minister helped bridge the past with the present, ensuring that the legacy of local and national heroes remains etched in public memory and continues to inspire future generations.
