Kishor Announces Candidacy for Bankipur Assembly Seat
Political strategist-turned-activist Prashant Kishor has announced his decision to contest the upcoming bypoll for the Bankipur assembly constituency in Bihar. He described the election as a 'referendum' on the performance of the state's BJP-led government. The seat became vacant after sitting BJP MLA and party state president Nitin Nabin resigned following his election to the Rajya Sabha.
Bypoll as a Verdict on Government Performance
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Kishor stated that the bypoll would serve as a direct test of public support for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Bihar. 'This election is not just about one seat; it is a referendum on the work of the BJP-led government,' he said. Kishor, who has been critical of the government's policies on unemployment and education, aims to leverage the bypoll to highlight these issues.
The Bankipur seat, located in the state capital Patna, has been a traditional BJP stronghold. Nitin Nabin had won the seat in the 2020 assembly elections. His resignation to take up the Rajya Sabha position necessitated the bypoll, which is expected to be held within the next few months. The Election Commission of India has not yet announced the date.
Political Significance and Reactions
Kishor's entry into the electoral fray marks a significant shift from his previous role as a behind-the-scenes campaign strategist for various parties, including the BJP, Congress, and Trinamool Congress. He has recently been vocal about Bihar's developmental challenges and has been leading a campaign called 'Jan Suraaj' to push for governance reforms. 'I have been working on the ground, and now I want to directly represent the people of Bankipur,' he added.
The BJP, however, downplayed Kishor's challenge. A party spokesperson said, 'Bankipur has always been a BJP bastion, and the people will reject outsiders who have no roots in the constituency.' The bypoll is expected to see a multi-cornered contest, with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress also likely to field candidates.
Impact on Bihar Politics
Political analysts view Kishor's move as an attempt to establish a new political force in Bihar. 'He is testing the waters for a broader political role. If he performs well, it could reshape the state's political landscape,' said a local political commentator. The bypoll result will be closely watched as a barometer of public mood ahead of the 2025 Bihar assembly elections.
