Prayagraj: The Sangam city remained in the grip of a severe heatwave on Wednesday, with scorching sunshine, hot winds, and high humidity making life miserable for residents. The maximum temperature touched 46.4 degrees Celsius, which is 4.7 degrees above normal, making Prayagraj the second hottest city in Uttar Pradesh after Banda, which recorded a blistering 47.8 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature settled at 28.6 degrees Celsius.
Oppressive Humidity Adds to Discomfort
The severe weather conditions became even more uncomfortable due to high moisture levels in the atmosphere. According to weather data, relative humidity ranged between 37% and 41%, causing profuse sweating and making the heat feel more oppressive. Residents complained that even short outdoor exposure left them exhausted.
Power Cuts Worsen Situation
Adding to the woes, frequent disruptions in electricity supply in several localities forced people to endure unbearable conditions indoors as well. Many residents reported that fans and coolers were rendered useless during outages, leading to sleepless nights and health concerns.
Nautapa Begins, Intensifying Heat
The ongoing spell of severe heat has gained further significance with the beginning of Nautapa, the nine-day period traditionally considered the hottest phase of summer. This astronomical phenomenon, occurring when the sun enters the Rohini Nakshatra, is believed to bring peak summer temperatures.
Deserted Streets and Cooling Measures
Roads and markets wore a deserted look during afternoon hours as people avoided unnecessary movement between noon and 4 pm. Those venturing outside were seen covering their faces with scarves and towels to protect themselves from the harsh sun. Temporary roadside water kiosks and stalls selling cold beverages witnessed brisk crowds throughout the day, offering some respite to the parched residents.
Health Advisory Issued
Doctors advised people to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, remain hydrated, and stay indoors as much as possible to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, dehydration, and exhaustion. They recommended consuming plenty of water, buttermilk, and fruit juices, and wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
Forecast: Relief Likely After 24 Hours
Weather officials stated that heatwave conditions are likely to persist for the next 24 hours, after which rain is expected to provide some relief. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a possible drop in temperatures and thundershowers in the region by the weekend.
As the city battles the intense heat, residents are hopeful for a break from the sweltering conditions. Meanwhile, authorities have been urged to ensure uninterrupted power supply and set up more drinking water facilities in public places.
