Punjab Christian Organizations Denounce Amit Shah's Anti-Conversion Law Proposal

In a strong rebuke, the Punjab Christian Movement (PCM) and Christian Awareness Leadership have publicly condemned Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent statement regarding religious conversions in Punjab. The groups issued their condemnation on Monday, responding to Shah's remarks made at the 'Badlav Rally' in Moga on Saturday.

Constitutional and Secular Concerns Raised

Addressing a press conference, PCM president Hamid Masih stated that Shah's pledge to enact a law banning religious conversions if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power in the 2027 state assembly elections is in direct contravention of the Indian Constitution and its secular principles. Hamid Masih emphasized that this statement appears specifically aimed at targeting the Christian community in Punjab.

"He targeted Christians in his speech in Ludhiana before the 2022 assembly polls and talked about bringing an anti-conversion law," Hamid Masih said. "Then, during an event held at Navi Mumbai to mark the 350th anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur, he showed Christians in a bad light, and now, at the Moga rally, he has once again taken aim at the community."

Historical Context and Allegations

The Christian representatives pointed out that whenever Shah mentions Punjab, he consistently discusses enacting an anti-conversion law. They alleged that the BJP has historically formed governments in several states by exploiting communal faultlines. However, they expressed confidence that such tactics would not succeed in Punjab, where people uphold communal harmony.

Christian Awareness Leadership president Peter Masih and other PCM members were also present at the press conference. They collectively asserted that the Christian community in Punjab would play a crucial role in maintaining this harmony and ensuring the BJP's defeat in the 2027 elections.

Appeal to the Christian Community

The groups have made a direct appeal to members of the Christian community across Punjab to unite and vote against the saffron party in the upcoming 2027 elections. They claimed that no political party can form a government in Punjab without the support of Christians, and they are committed to using their electoral power to oppose the BJP.

The representatives stressed that the Union home minister should remember that India is home to people of diverse faiths, and as a custodian of the nation, he is responsible for all citizens, not just one community. They reiterated their commitment to preserving Punjab's communal fabric and ensuring that political strategies based on division do not gain traction in the state.
