Punjab Chief Minister Questions India's Sovereignty Amid US Waiver for Russian Oil
In a sharp critique, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday targeted the Central government over a recent United States waiver that permits Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil. Mann raised concerns about India's diplomatic autonomy, questioning whether the country's policies are being dictated from the White House.
Mann Demands Answers from Prime Minister Modi
Responding to queries about US President Donald Trump granting India a 30-day window to import Russian oil, Mann expressed strong disapproval. "Is India being run from the US White House? Are we seeking permissions from there?" he asked. "The headlines today indicated that Donald Trump gave India the go-ahead to procure oil from Russia for 30 days. Who is truly governing our nation? Modi ji must address this issue."
Mann further elaborated on his concerns, suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's perceived weaknesses are being exploited by the Trump administration. "What vulnerability of Modi is being leveraged by Trump that necessitates following his directives?" he questioned, highlighting a perceived erosion of India's independent foreign policy.
Criticism of US Influence and Agricultural Treaties
The Chief Minister lamented that India, once aspiring to become a global leader or 'Vishav Guru', has been reduced to a follower or 'Vishav Chela' due to US dominance. "It is deeply unfortunate that our nation's foreign policy and sovereignty appear compromised," he stated.
Mann also voiced apprehensions about bilateral treaties with the United States, particularly those impacting the agricultural sector. "Agreements covering crops from soybean to maize are being signed. Soon, we may need US approval before sowing seeds they supply. This poses a greater threat than the recently withdrawn farm laws," he warned, accusing Trump of acting like a global village head or 'sarpanch'.
Positive Developments: Tata Steel Investment in Punjab
Shifting focus to economic progress, Mann announced a significant industrial milestone for Punjab. "March 20 will mark a historic day for our state as Tata Steel commences operations at its second-largest plant in India," he revealed. The project, involving an investment of Rs 3,200 crore, is expected to create over 3,000 direct jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region.
Addressing the West Asia Crisis and Stranded Punjabis
On the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Mann provided updates on efforts to repatriate stranded individuals from Punjab. "Currently, 385 Punjab residents have been identified as trapped in Middle Eastern countries due to the turmoil. Approximately 300 are tourists stuck in the UAE, with the remainder in other regional nations," he explained. The state government is coordinating with the Central government to facilitate their return in batches, with Punjab's NRIs affairs minister stationed in Delhi until resolution.
Opposition to Electricity Bill and Political Critiques
Mann also declared the state government's firm opposition to the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025. "This legislation represents an attempt by the Centre to encroach on state rights, which is unacceptable. Electricity, health, and education are state subjects, and federal interference is unjustified," he asserted.
In political remarks, Mann criticized the Congress party for boycotting the governor's address, accusing them of seeking media attention through theatrics. He also took a swipe at Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal, describing him as living in a 'fool's paradise' and attempting to mislead the public with unrealistic promises.
