Raghav Chadha's Diminished Visibility in AAP Fuels Speculation About Political Future
Once considered a trusted lieutenant of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and a prominent face of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Raghav Chadha has recently been conspicuously absent from the political spotlight. His prolonged silence on critical party matters and absence from public engagements alongside senior leaders have ignited widespread speculation regarding his current standing and future role within the organization.
Notable Absences and Growing Questions
Chadha, who previously served as the party's national spokesperson, has missed several recent appearances with Kejriwal. More significantly, he has refrained from commenting on major developments, including the recent discharge of Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and others in the excise policy case. His absence extended to key party events such as press conferences and a rally at Jantar Mantar, further amplifying concerns about his involvement.
The first indications of a potential rift emerged in March 2024 when Kejriwal was arrested in connection with the excise policy case. At that critical juncture, Chadha was notably absent, with the party citing medical reasons for his being abroad. However, his extended period away from public engagement has continued to raise eyebrows and fuel conjecture about internal dynamics.
Political Reactions and Public Perception
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring commented on the situation, stating, "It is now clear that Raghav Chadha is separate from the Aam Aadmi Party. People realized this long ago, when he went to London while Kejriwal was arrested. Public perception now is that Chadha will leave or be removed from the party and join elsewhere." This observation underscores the growing external perception of Chadha's distancing from AAP's core activities.
Official Leadership Change in Rajya Sabha
Adding substance to the speculation, the Aam Aadmi Party formally informed the Rajya Sabha Secretariat on Thursday that Ashok Kumar Mittal will now serve as its new deputy leader in the Upper House, replacing Raghav Chadha in this significant role. Mittal, a Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab elected in April 2022, has served on several important parliamentary committees including the Committee on Defence and the Committee on Finance.
In February 2026, Mittal was additionally appointed as a member of the India-US Parliamentary Friendship Group. He was also part of an all-party delegation led by Kanimozhi that visited Russia, Latvia, Slovenia, Greece, and Spain following the Pahalgam terror attack last year, demonstrating his active parliamentary engagement.
Chadha's Parliamentary Record and Advocacy
Despite his recent low profile, Chadha has been a Member of Parliament since April 2022 and has garnered attention for raising several important public issues in Parliament. Last month, he highlighted concerns about the practice of "sarpanch pati" or "panchayat pati," where women elected to reserved panchayat seats often serve as mere figureheads while male relatives exercise actual power. He urged the government to ensure that women representatives in local bodies can wield genuine authority as intended under the 73rd Constitutional Amendment.
Chadha has also addressed menstrual hygiene in Parliament, emphasizing that it represents a crucial matter of health, education, and equality affecting over 35 crore women and girls across India. He argued that when a girl misses school due to lack of sanitary pads, water, and privacy, it constitutes not merely a personal problem but a collective societal failure. "Society has turned a biological fact into a social taboo," he remarked during his address.
Earlier this year, amid gig workers' agitation, Chadha undertook a day working as a delivery partner to gain firsthand understanding of the pressures and challenges associated with such jobs, showcasing his hands-on approach to policy issues.
Uncertain Future Amid Organizational Shifts
The combination of Chadha's prolonged absence from party events, his silence on pivotal issues, and his replacement in a key parliamentary position by Ashok Kumar Mittal has created an atmosphere of uncertainty around his political trajectory. While the party initially attributed his absence to medical reasons, the extended duration and timing relative to significant party developments have led to increased scrutiny and speculation about potential internal realignments within the Aam Aadmi Party.
