Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will launch a two-day visit to his parliamentary constituency Rae Bareli starting Tuesday. He plans to address an "MGNREGA Chaupal" as part of the party's nationwide campaign, 'MGNREGA Bachao Sangram'. This initiative aims to protect rural employment schemes.
Focus on Rural Employment Issues
On Tuesday, Gandhi will speak at the chaupal in the Unchahar area. The Congress intends to highlight critical issues related to rural employment and livelihoods during this event. This outreach follows the BJP government's decision to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The government introduced the Viksit Bharat — Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (VB-G RAM G Act) as a replacement.
Engaging with Constituents
According to party sources, Gandhi will also tour villages within his constituency. He will interact directly with residents to discuss local concerns. These discussions will include worries about the new legislation impacting employment opportunities.
Later on Tuesday, Gandhi will inaugurate a cricket tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium. Former India cricketer RP Singh, who hails from Rae Bareli, is expected to attend the event. This adds a local sporting touch to his visit.
Meetings with Party Workers
On January 21, Gandhi has scheduled meetings with party officials and workers from Rae Bareli and the neighboring Amethi constituency. Amethi MP Kishori Lal Sharma will also participate in these interactions, as confirmed by party leaders.
Congress Protest Campaign
The Congress has been actively organizing sit-ins, protests, and panchayat-level outreach programs across Uttar Pradesh under the 'MGNREGA Bachao Sangram' banner. Last week, party members staged protests in Varanasi. State unit chief Ajay Rai led these demonstrations, which included a symbolic fast. NSUI workers followed with a protest march.
Earlier this month, the Congress announced a year-long protest plan. The first phase runs from January 10 to February 25, indicating sustained efforts to address employment law changes.
