Congress Announces Rahul Gandhi's Tamil Nadu Campaign Tour Schedule

Amid mounting criticism from opposition parties regarding his absence from campaign activities in Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has officially announced that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will tour the state later this month. According to the committee, Gandhi is scheduled to address four major rallies across different regions of Tamil Nadu, marking his first significant campaign engagement in the state following the completion of seat-sharing talks with alliance partners.

Opposition Questions Delay in Gandhi's Visit

Opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), have sharply criticized Gandhi for not visiting Tamil Nadu despite campaigning in other southern states like Kerala and Telangana. BJP state vice-president N Jayaprakash highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Tamil Nadu three times this year alone, emphasizing Modi's commitment to the welfare of Tamil people. He questioned why Gandhi has prioritized other states over Tamil Nadu.

Further criticism came from BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam, who noted that Gandhi's only visit to Tamil Nadu this year was a brief trip to a school in Gudalur, near his Wayanad constituency. AIADMK functionaries alleged that Gandhi's absence indicates underlying friction within the DMK–Congress alliance, pointing out that he did not even post a congratulatory message after the seat-sharing talks were finalized.

Congress Responds to Allegations

TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai defended the delay, attributing it to the standard operating procedures (SOP) governing political meetings in Tamil Nadu. He explained that applications for major rallies must be submitted two to four weeks in advance, which has impacted the scheduling. Selvaperunthagai denied any alliance issues, stating that Gandhi's tour is part of a tentative plan spanning two to three days, with exact dates and venues to be announced once finalized.

During the 2021 assembly election campaign, Gandhi made multiple visits to Tamil Nadu, including a three-day tour in January featuring roadshows and public meetings. This upcoming tour is seen as a strategic move to bolster the Congress's presence in the state, especially after the party settled for 28 seats in the alliance, down from its initial demand of 35 seats and a share in power.

Political Implications and Future Outlook

The announcement of Gandhi's tour comes at a critical juncture, as opposition parties leverage his absence to question the Congress's commitment to Tamil Nadu. The BJP's emphasis on Modi's frequent visits contrasts sharply with Gandhi's limited engagement, potentially influencing voter perceptions. Meanwhile, the Congress aims to use these rallies to reconnect with the electorate and address local issues, reinforcing its alliance with the DMK.

As political tensions rise, all eyes will be on Gandhi's upcoming rallies, which are expected to draw significant attention and set the tone for the Congress's campaign strategy in Tamil Nadu. The outcome could have broader implications for the party's performance in the state and its national political standing.
