Defence Minister Highlights Growing Threats
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday lauded the Indian Navy for its role in safeguarding the nation's maritime interests, emphasising that increasing geopolitical competition and the growing presence of extra-regional powers have made heightened maritime vigilance essential. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Singh underscored the Navy's critical contribution to maintaining stability in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), a key area for India's economic and strategic interests.
Navy's Role in a Changing Geopolitical Landscape
According to Singh, the Indian Navy has consistently demonstrated its capability to protect sea lanes, deter threats, and project power in the region. He noted that the IOR is witnessing a significant rise in naval deployments by non-littoral states, which necessitates a robust and responsive maritime force. The minister stressed that India's maritime security is directly linked to its economic prosperity, as over 90% of the country's trade by volume is conducted via sea routes.
Operational Readiness and Modernisation
Singh also highlighted the Navy's ongoing modernisation efforts, including the induction of new warships, submarines, and aircraft. He cited the commissioning of INS Visakhapatnam, a stealth destroyer, and the acquisition of P-8I maritime patrol aircraft as examples of India's commitment to maintaining a credible naval deterrent. The minister urged the Navy to continue enhancing its operational readiness to address emerging challenges such as piracy, terrorism, and illegal fishing.
Collaboration and Diplomacy
In addition to military preparedness, Singh emphasised the importance of maritime diplomacy and collaboration with friendly nations. He pointed to India's participation in exercises like Malabar with the US, Japan, and Australia, and its role in the Indian Ocean Rim Association as key pillars of its maritime strategy. The minister reiterated that a secure and stable IOR benefits not only India but the entire region.
