Rajnath Singh Highlights Past Trust Crisis in Politics, Calls for Credibility in Public Life
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed a critical issue in Indian politics on Tuesday, stating that the political sphere had previously suffered from a severe crisis of trust. Speaking at a memorial event in Bhubaneswar, he emphasized that modesty and credibility should always remain the cornerstone of public life, urging leaders to restore faith through their actions.
Perception of Politicians and the Loss of Credibility
Singh pointed out that until recently, there was a widespread perception that politicians often did not speak the truth or practice what they preached. He noted that if someone felt misled, they would commonly retort, "Are you doing politics with me?" This sentiment reflected how the word "rajneeti" (politics) had lost its credibility among the public.
"The word rajneeti had lost credibility," Singh remarked, highlighting the deep-seated skepticism that had plagued the political landscape. However, he added that there were dedicated leaders who worked tirelessly to restore faith in politics, demonstrating that integrity and honesty can rebuild public trust.
Tribute to Debendra Pradhan's Integrity and Simplicity
The Defence Minister was speaking at a Smriti Sabha held on the first death anniversary of former Union minister Debendra Pradhan, who was the father of current Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Singh remembered Debendra Pradhan as a "rare personality who upheld the dignity of politics," praising his unwavering commitment to matching words with action.
Recalling their years of working together, Singh witnessed Pradhan's simplicity, humility, and dedication firsthand. "He was not just a politician but a straightforward, simple and humble human being," Singh said. He emphasized that Pradhan did what he said, never made false promises, and remained accessible to all, often walking alongside workers and engaging with people directly.
Event Highlights and Dignitaries Present
The memorial event was attended by several prominent figures, including:
- Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi
- Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal
- Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
On this occasion, the Odia and Hindi editions of Debendra Pradhan's memorial book, titled 'Doctor Babu,' were officially released. Additionally, a short film chronicling his life and contributions was screened, paying tribute to his legacy of service and integrity.
Broader Implications for Political Conduct
Singh's remarks underscore a broader call for ethical conduct in politics, stressing that leaders must prioritize credibility to overcome past trust deficits. By highlighting examples like Debendra Pradhan, he aimed to inspire current and future politicians to embody similar values of honesty and accessibility.
This event not only honored a respected figure but also served as a platform to reinforce the importance of trust in governance, reminding all public servants that their actions directly impact public perception and the health of democratic institutions.
