Tiger Encounter at Ranthambore: Forest Guards Escape Unharmed After Close Call
In a heart-stopping incident at Rajasthan's renowned Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR), two forest personnel had a miraculous escape after coming face-to-face with a tiger during their morning patrol on Monday. The dramatic encounter occurred around 9:30 AM near Sultanpur naka in the Gada Doob forest area, within the range of project tiger (ROPT) territory.
The Sudden Confrontation
Forest Guard Niranjan and Home Guard Jitendra Sharma were patrolling the area on a motorcycle when they unexpectedly encountered tiger RBT-2511. According to officials at RTR, the tiger was positioned near a sharp bend along a particularly steep section of the forest track.
A forest staff member described the tense moment: "The tiger was sitting near a sharp bend along a steep stretch of the forest track. As the motorcycle approached the turn, the tiger suddenly appeared in front of them and let out a loud growl, catching the staff completely off guard."
Immediate Response and Escape
Faced with immediate danger, the two forest personnel made a split-second decision to abandon their motorcycle and run approximately 15 meters ahead to a safer distance. Armed only with basic sticks for protection, they maintained their position while closely monitoring the tiger's movements, ensuring they kept adequate distance from the powerful animal.
The tiger remained near the abandoned motorcycle for nearly ten minutes, during which it exhibited curious and aggressive behavior toward the vehicle. "It circled the motorcycle several times and tore the seat. The animal also struck the vehicle repeatedly with its paws," officials reported.
Resolution and Aftermath
For several tense minutes, the two personnel waited at a distance, carefully observing the tiger's behavior. Eventually, the tiger moved away toward a nearby hill, easing the dangerous situation and allowing the staff to move to safety.
A forest official provided details of the rescue: "A tourist gypsy reached the spot within minutes and picked up the forest personnel from the area. Both men escaped completely unharmed, though the motorcycle sustained visible damage during the incident."
Official Perspective on Wildlife Encounters
Forest officials noted that such encounters occasionally occur in dense forest areas, particularly along narrow tracks and blind turns where visibility is naturally limited. "Such encounters sometimes occur in forest areas, especially along narrow tracks and blind turns where visibility is limited. However, the animal did not attack or chase the staff. It quietly moved away after posing no danger," explained an official.
The incident highlights the inherent risks faced by forest personnel working in tiger habitats while underscoring the importance of proper protocols during wildlife encounters. Both guards demonstrated appropriate response by maintaining distance and avoiding direct confrontation with the protected animal.
