Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader has strongly criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab for its decision to withdraw the security of former MLA and senior party leader Harbhajan Singh. The SAD leader termed the move as a politically motivated act of vendetta, accusing the ruling party of targeting opposition leaders.
Security Withdrawal Sparks Controversy
The AAP government's decision to revoke the security cover of Harbhajan Singh, a prominent SAD leader and former legislator, has sparked a political controversy in Punjab. The SAD leader alleged that the withdrawal was done without any valid reason, reflecting the ruling party's vindictive attitude towards opponents.
Political Vendetta Alleged
Speaking to media persons, the SAD leader said, "This is a clear case of political vendetta. The AAP government is misusing its power to settle scores with opposition leaders. Harbhajan Singh's security was withdrawn without any threat assessment or justification." He further added that such actions undermine the democratic process and create an atmosphere of fear among political workers.
The SAD has demanded an immediate restoration of security for Harbhajan Singh and has threatened to launch a statewide protest if the government does not reconsider its decision. The party has also sought an explanation from the state government regarding the criteria used for withdrawing security cover.
Government's Stand
Meanwhile, the AAP government has defended its decision, stating that security reviews are a routine process based on threat perception and available resources. A government spokesperson said, "Security cover is reviewed periodically, and decisions are taken based on the advice of security agencies. There is no political bias involved."
However, the SAD remains unconvinced and has accused the government of targeting opposition leaders to stifle dissent. The party has called upon the governor to intervene and ensure that security is not used as a tool for political intimidation.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions in Punjab, with the SAD and AAP engaging in frequent verbal spats over various issues. The security withdrawal issue is likely to further strain relations between the two parties.
