SAD slams Haryana gurdwara body after hospital staff strike

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Haryana unit has strongly criticised a faction of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) for disrupting the functioning of Miri Piri Hospital in Kurukshetra, a day after the hospital staff went on strike over unpaid salaries. SAD Haryana president Harkesh Singh Mohri, accompanied by community leaders, visited the hospital on July 4, 2026, and met with protesting employees.

Employees Submit Memorandum to SAD Leader

The staff, organised under the Miri Piri Karamchari Sangharsh Samiti, submitted a memorandum to Mohri detailing their grievances. They have not received salaries for three months, forcing them to stage a dharna at the hospital. Mohri assured them that he would raise the matter with the SAD leadership and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president.

“The employees have been waiting for their salaries for three months and are forced to stage a dharna at the hospital because of the wrong decisions of some HSGMC leaders. The same section of leaders is also affecting the functioning of the HSGMC by not letting the budget to be passed,” Mohri said.

Mohri Blames HSGMC Infighting for Hospital Crisis

Mohri alleged that certain HSGMC leaders were aware that the Haryana committee lacked adequate funds to support the hospital but still attempted to take over its possession. Following an order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, they claimed the Haryana committee would bear all expenses and assume control. “Due to their vested interests, they have disturbed the smooth functioning of the hospital and the committee,” he added.

The SAD leader noted that while the Sikh community runs welfare services, employees of its own healthcare facility are struggling to support their families because of internal conflicts. “People have already started resigning due to the uncertainty and pending salaries. If the situation is not addressed, the hospital will be closed. We will request SAD president Sukhbir Badal to discuss the issue with the SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami to support the hospital and clear the salaries,” Mohri stated.

HSGMC President Appeals for Calm

HSGMC president Jagdish Singh Jhinda acknowledged the gravity of the situation, describing Miri Piri Hospital as a major healthcare facility run by the Sikh community. “Due to the current situation, a wrong message is being sent out to the people. The SGPC should give the salaries till the hospital is formally taken over by the HSGMC,” he said. Jhinda announced that a meeting with the SGPC president would be held soon and appealed to employees to resume their duties to avoid inconvenience to patients.
