Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the saffron party has maintained its tradition of empowering corrupt individuals. His remarks were directed at the West Bengal Chief Minister, though he did not name anyone specifically. Raut's comments come amid the ongoing political turmoil in the state ahead of the assembly elections.
BJP's response to Raut's allegations
The BJP was quick to retaliate, dismissing Raut's claims as baseless. Party spokesperson said that while allegations against BJP leaders like Suvendu Adhikari have not been proven in any court of law, Raut himself has been to jail in connection with a corruption case. 'He should look at his own record before making such allegations,' the spokesperson added.
Political context in West Bengal
The war of words between the two parties has intensified as the West Bengal Assembly elections approach. The BJP has been accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of corruption, while the opposition parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT), have been critical of the BJP's alliance with certain regional leaders. Raut's statement is seen as an attempt to consolidate anti-BJP votes in the state.
Meanwhile, political analysts believe that such exchanges are likely to continue as the election campaign heats up. The BJP is aiming to retain power in West Bengal, while the opposition is trying to form a united front against the ruling party at the Centre.
