The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed strong disapproval of the National Testing Agency (NTA) over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, stating that no lessons had been learned from previous incidents. The court directed the Centre and investigating agencies to respond to the matter.
NEET-UG 2026 Examination Cancelled
The NEET-UG 2026 examination, which was conducted on May 3, was cancelled on May 12 following allegations of a paper leak. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the case to identify those responsible for the breach.
Supreme Court's Observations
During the hearing, a bench of the Supreme Court remarked that the NTA had failed to implement adequate measures to prevent such incidents despite previous occurrences. The court sought detailed responses from the Centre, the NTA, and other agencies involved in the investigation.
The bench emphasized the need for accountability and urged the authorities to ensure that such lapses do not recur. The court also highlighted the impact on students who had prepared for the examination and faced uncertainty due to the cancellation.
CBI Investigation Underway
The CBI has registered a case and is investigating the paper leak. The agency is examining the role of officials and others who may have been involved in the leak. The Supreme Court has asked for a status report on the investigation.
The court is expected to hear the matter further after receiving responses from the concerned parties. The outcome of the case will have significant implications for the conduct of future examinations by the NTA.
