SGPC Leads Protest Over Khalra Case Convict

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Friday accused the Punjab government of adopting a 'soft approach' toward a police officer convicted in the Jaswant Singh Khalra murder case. During a protest march from the Golden Temple Plaza to the Deputy Commissioner's office, the SGPC submitted a memorandum to the Punjab Governor through Additional Deputy Commissioner Pallavi Mishra, demanding immediate lifting of the ban on the film 'Satluj', which is based on the life of the slain human rights activist.

SGPC President Questions Leniency

SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami questioned the government's lenient approach, alleging that while efforts were being made to grant relief to convicted police officials, cases of Sikh prisoners who had spent long periods in jail remained unresolved. He specifically referred to Balwant Singh Rajoana, Jagtar Singh Hawara, and other Sikh prisoners, claiming that successive governments had ignored issues concerning Sikh sentiments.

Jaswant Singh Khalra's Legacy

Dhami described Khalra's killing as an unparalleled sacrifice for truth and human rights. Khalra had collected official records from cremation grounds and municipal bodies, documenting the cremation of unidentified bodies, which ultimately led to his murder. The SGPC continues to seek justice for Khalra and the lifting of the ban on the film that chronicles his life and work.
