Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar on Monday sharply criticized the recent hike in LPG cylinder prices, asserting that the government will have to pay a political price for rising inflation. Speaking to reporters, Pawar claimed that people across the country are facing severe hardship due to the continuous increase in prices of essential commodities.
Pawar questions government's claim on inflation control
The veteran politician questioned the government's repeated assertions that price rise is under control. He pointed out that common citizens are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of cooking gas and other daily necessities skyrockets. Pawar argued that the data presented by the government does not reflect the ground reality faced by millions of Indians.
Political implications of LPG price hike
Pawar warned that the ruling party would have to face the consequences of its economic policies in the upcoming elections. He stated that the burden of inflation is disproportionately falling on the middle and lower-middle classes, who form a significant voter base. The NCP (SP) chief urged the government to roll back the LPG price hike immediately and take concrete steps to control inflation.
The LPG cylinder price was increased by Rs 50 per cylinder last week, marking the third hike in the last two months. This has led to widespread protests from opposition parties and consumer groups. Pawar's comments come amid growing criticism of the government's handling of the economy, with inflation emerging as a key issue in political discourse.
Opposition parties have been demanding a reduction in excise duties on fuel and better targeting of subsidies to ease the burden on the poor. Pawar reiterated his party's demand for a comprehensive review of the pricing policy for petroleum products.
