Shiv Sena Honors Pahalgam Terror Attack Victim with New Home in Kashmir Village
The tranquil village of Hapatnar, nestled at the foothills of the Pir Panjal mountains approximately 15 kilometers beyond Pahalgam, witnessed an unusual flurry of activity on Tuesday. Instead of the typical quiet, numerous Shiv Sena workers gathered, carrying portraits of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and party leader Eknath Shinde. However, the atmosphere was notably solemn, devoid of political sloganeering or posturing, as this was not a party rally but a heartfelt ceremony.
Virtual Handover of a New Home
In a poignant virtual event, Eknath Shinde presented a newly built one-storey house to the family of Syed Adil Hussain Shah, the lone local victim of last year's devastating Pahalgam terror attack. Shah, a ponywallah, tragically lost his life while courageously attempting to save tourists during the incident. Maharashtra ministers Sanjay Shirsat and Yogesh Ramdas Kadam were physically present in the village to oversee the proceedings, ensuring the ceremony proceeded with dignity and respect.
From Financial Aid to Permanent Shelter
Shinde had previously extended financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the grieving family. Upon learning about the dilapidated condition of their existing home, he made the compassionate decision to construct a permanent residence for them. The house was built at an estimated cost of Rs 10-12 lakh, symbolizing a lasting tribute to Adil's bravery. "Many thought we would not fulfil our promise, but we have now completed the house and handed it over to the family," stated Minister Sanjay Shirsat. He emphasized that this gesture honors Adil's ultimate sacrifice and sends a powerful message across the nation about his selfless act of laying down his life for others.
A Family's Mix of Grief and Pride
For Adil's family, the day was imbued with a complex blend of sorrow and pride. His father, Syed Haider Shah, expressed how the loss has plunged the family into profound grief. "But, when I think he died protecting tourists, it makes me proud," he shared, highlighting the bittersweet nature of their emotions. The family had initially hoped for Shinde's physical visit on the first anniversary of the attack, but due to unavoidable circumstances, he could not attend and instead sent the two ministers as his representatives.
Comprehensive Support and Renewed Hope
In addition to the Shiv Sena's contribution, the Jammu and Kashmir government, along with various other organizations, has provided the family with approximately Rs 20 lakh in financial assistance. This collective support has been instrumental in helping them rebuild their lives. Adil's wife, Gulnaz Akhter, has secured a permanent job in the fisheries department, while his brother, Nazakat, obtained a daily-wage position with the waqf board. Another brother, Naushad, who previously drove vehicles for others, now owns a taxi valued at around Rs 12 lakh, marking a significant step towards self-sufficiency.
A Message of Humanity Beyond Religious Divides
Reflecting on his son's legacy, Haider Shah remarked that Adil's sacrifice underscores the importance of rising above religious divides to protect humanity. "Adil was the backbone of our family, and I was expecting our lot to worsen after his death. But the support from so many quarters has helped us stay afloat," he acknowledged. Expressing deep gratitude to the Shiv Sena chief, Shah noted, "He has no vote bank here, and we were not his voters. Still, his people visited us many times all these months during the construction of the house and after it. These memories remain." This act of kindness, devoid of political motives, stands as a testament to compassion and solidarity in times of tragedy.
