The political landscape in Maharashtra is once again witnessing turbulence as the Shiv Sena factions engage in damage control amid fresh speculation of defections. The Shinde camp has indicated that 'Operation Tiger' is in its final stages, claiming that at least seven of the nine Shiv Sena (UBT) members are in touch with the Shiv Sena leadership led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Operation Wolf to Counter Defections
In response, the Thackeray faction is reportedly planning 'Operation Wolf' to stem the tide of potential defections. Sources within the Shiv Sena (UBT) suggest that the party is working on a strategy to retain its flock and counter the Shinde camp's moves.
Background of the Rift
The rift between the two factions has been ongoing since June 2022 when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, resulting in the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Since then, both sides have been engaged in a bitter battle for control over the party's symbol and legacy.
The Election Commission of India recognized the Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena in February 2023, dealing a blow to Thackeray's camp. However, the legal battle continues, with the Supreme Court yet to deliver a final verdict on the disqualification of 16 MLAs.
With the buzz of defections growing louder, both factions are leaving no stone unturned to consolidate their positions. The Thackeray camp is particularly wary of losing more MLAs, which could weaken their standing in the state assembly.
Political analysts believe that the coming days will be crucial for both factions as they navigate the treacherous waters of Maharashtra politics. The success of 'Operation Wolf' will depend on how effectively the Thackeray faction can counter the Shinde camp's strategy.
