The Assam state election commission has initiated the process of preparing, updating, and publishing electoral rolls for the inaugural election to the Silchar municipal corporation. This marks a significant milestone in the city's transition to a full-fledged urban local body under the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022.
Schedule for Electoral Roll Preparation
The commission has notified the schedule for ward-wise preparation of electoral rolls covering all 42 wards. The transition from a municipal board to a municipal corporation became fully effective in mid-2025. According to the notification issued on Saturday, draft electoral rolls will be published on June 29. Citizens can file claims and objections until July 6, with disposal of these claims and objections to be completed by July 13. The final electoral rolls are scheduled for publication on July 15.
Training Program for Registration Officers
In preparation for the upcoming civic polls, a training program for Registration Officers (ROs) was conducted on Friday at the old conference hall of the Cachar district commissioner’s office. District development commissioner Rajib Roy and election officer Masi Topno led the sessions, focusing on legal provisions, procedures, and responsibilities related to electoral roll preparation.
Officials have urged residents to verify their names and details in the draft rolls once published and to submit any claims or objections within the stipulated period. This process ensures accuracy and inclusivity in the electoral rolls for the first municipal corporation election in Silchar.
