SIT to Probe Fake Accounts in TMC's Lakshmir Bhandar Scheme: West Bengal CM
SIT to Probe Fake Accounts in Lakshmir Bhandar Scheme

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged creation of fake accounts under the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, a financial assistance program for women initiated by the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. The chief minister made this announcement on Monday, stating that the investigation aims to uncover irregularities in the scheme's implementation.

Allegations of Misuse

Adhikari claimed that during the tenure of the previous TMC government, several men had fraudulently availed benefits under the scheme, which was specifically designed to provide financial support to women. He asserted that the SIT would thoroughly examine the records and identify those responsible for the misuse of public funds. The chief minister emphasized that his government is committed to transparency and accountability in all welfare schemes.

Formation of SIT

The SIT will comprise senior police and administrative officials who will conduct a detailed investigation into the alleged fake accounts. The team has been tasked with tracing the beneficiaries, verifying their identities, and taking legal action against those found guilty of fraud. The chief minister also directed the state administration to ensure that genuine beneficiaries receive their due benefits without any hindrance.

Political Reactions

The announcement has sparked a political debate in the state, with the TMC dismissing the allegations as a political vendetta. TMC leaders have accused the new government of targeting the previous administration's welfare schemes for political gains. However, the chief minister maintained that the investigation is purely administrative and aims to protect the interests of the state's women.

The Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, launched in 2021, provides monthly financial assistance to women from economically weaker sections. The alleged irregularities have raised concerns about the scheme's implementation, and the SIT probe is expected to bring clarity to the matter.
