A tragic incident in Amreli district, Gujarat, has brought to light the escalating threat posed by stray dogs in a region traditionally known for its high population of Asiatic lions and leopards. On Tuesday, a seven-year-old girl was mauled to death by three stray dogs on a farm near Vadiya village.
Details of the Incident
The victim, Anjana Sastai, was the daughter of a migrant farm labourer from Madhya Pradesh. Her family had been working as labourers on the farm owned by Vadhir Hirpara. While the family was working in a field, three dogs attacked the child, leaving her critically injured. She was rushed to a government hospital by ambulance but succumbed to her injuries shortly after treatment began.
Police Investigation
Vadiya police have initiated an inquiry into the death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. According to police statements, Anjana's elder sister had also been attacked by dogs 10 to 12 days prior, highlighting a recurring problem in the area.
Rising Menace of Stray Dogs
Amreli district, which boasts the highest population of lions in Gujarat along with a significant number of leopards and other wild animals, has long faced the spectre of wildlife attacks. However, stray dogs are increasingly emerging as a major threat, particularly to children. Local residents have been demanding urgent action from authorities to curb the menace, as instances of dog attacks continue to rise.
The incident underscores the need for effective measures to manage stray dog populations and protect vulnerable communities, especially in rural areas where migrant labourers and their families are often at risk.
