Bhopal: Three young friends were killed after a speeding truck allegedly rammed head-on into their auto-rickshaw in Rewa district on Thursday night, leaving the three-wheeler completely mangled. Police said the victims were returning after visiting a relative’s house when the accident took place.
The deceased were identified as Harishankar Chaturvedi, 22, and Ashish Upadhyay, 22, both residents of Bahuri Bandh, and Shailendra Tiwari, 23, a resident of Dihiya Bhatlo village. Police said all three were travelling in the same auto when the speeding truck collided with the vehicle from the front.
According to police, the impact of the crash was so severe that the auto was reduced to a heap of twisted metal and the victims died on the spot before help could arrive. Local residents rushed to the site after hearing loud cries and alerted police and ambulance services. However, by the time the youths were pulled out of the wreckage, they had already succumbed to their injuries.
Preliminary investigation suggests that overspeeding and negligent driving led to the accident. Police said the truck was allegedly moving at a high speed at the time of the collision. The vehicle involved in the crash has been seized and kept at the police station for further investigation.
Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information and, with the help of locals, recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem examination.
The deaths triggered grief in Bahuri Bandh and Dihiya Bhatlo villages.
