Kolkata witnessed two tragic bike accidents early Sunday and late Saturday night, resulting in the deaths of three women and injuries to four others. The incidents occurred in the Maidan and Jorasanko police station areas.
First Accident on Red Road
Around 3:10 am on Sunday, a bike and a scooter collided on Red Road. The pillion riders, Raniya Singh (24) and Vidhya Gurung (19), who were reportedly not wearing helmets, succumbed to their injuries. Three others, including riders Saikat Sikder (28), Md Azharuddin (28) — Singh's husband — and Vishal Majhi (34), sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals.
Second Incident in Jorasanko
In a separate incident on Saturday night, Sana Parveen (28) died on Tara Chand Dutta Road in Jorasanko when a heavy goods vehicle collided with the two-wheeler she was riding pillion on. Parveen was also not wearing a helmet. She was declared brought dead at Calcutta Medical College. The two-wheeler rider, Sahabaz Hossain, was treated and discharged.
Police Action
Jorasanko police have seized the offending truck and apprehended the driver. Investigations are ongoing in both cases.
