Guwahati: Three women were killed in a road accident early Sunday after the car they were traveling in rammed into a parked truck in Guwahati's Mathgharia area. The incident occurred near a private hospital at around 4 am, leaving two of the four occupants dead on the spot, while the third succumbed to her injuries after being taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as Puja Saha (26) from Goalpara, Akanksha Saikia (23) from Sivasagar, and Armina Ahmed, alias Neha, from New Bongaigaon. Saikia, who hailed from Sapekhati in Sonari, was employed in the admissions department of Royal Global University.
Driver Flees Scene
Traffic DCP Jayanta Sarathi Bora said the car driver, Shemim Ahmed, immediately fled the accident scene and is absconding. "Efforts are underway to trace him," Bora said. Coming from the Geetanagar side, the car struck the truck, which was parked on the roadside after unloading goods, in a head-on collision, leading to the death of the trio. Such was the severity of the impact that rescue teams had to use drilling machines to cut through the mangled remains of the car to retrieve the bodies.
Investigation Underway
As per preliminary investigation, Bora said the car was hired from a rental service provider in Guwahati. "The owner of the vehicle has already been contacted," he added. The police are continuing their search for the driver and are examining the rental records to gather more details about the incident.
