The Thrissur Pooram celebrations this year were significantly curtailed following a tragic incident at a fireworks unit. The iconic Kudamattam ceremony, which usually extends for more than an hour, was limited to just about 15 minutes.
Security Measures Enhanced
In light of the tragedy, authorities implemented stringent security arrangements. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Law & Order, H Venkatesh, stated, "We have made security arrangements, drones, CCTVs, and covered all the important points for the festival. This time, we expect the same crowd during the Kudamattam ceremony." Drones and CCTV cameras were deployed to monitor the large gatherings expected for the event.
Background of the Incident
The fireworks unit tragedy, which occurred earlier this month, prompted the district administration to review the scale of the festivities. The decision to curtail the Kudamattam was taken to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents. The Pooram, one of Kerala's most famous temple festivals, usually attracts thousands of devotees and spectators.
The Thrissur Pooram is known for its grand display of caparisoned elephants, traditional percussion ensembles, and the spectacular Kudamattam, where participants exchange brightly colored umbrellas. This year, the event was held under strict supervision, with police and fire services on high alert.
The curtailed celebrations have drawn mixed reactions from the public, with many understanding the need for safety while others expressed disappointment over the reduced duration of the ceremony.
