Thunderstorms Worsen Power Cuts in Noida, Ghaziabad

Noida: After residents endured a sleepless night due to power outages on Wednesday, thundershowers on Thursday led to fresh power cuts and preventive shutdowns across several sectors in Noida and Ghaziabad. Cables snapped and numerous poles fell during the afternoon showers. Several trees and hoardings collapsed across Noida, Dadri, and Jewar, forcing discom officials to take action to avert accidents.

Power Outages in Noida

In Noida, power interruptions began after 9 PM on Wednesday and continued into the early hours of Thursday. A technical snag at a 33 kV feeder in the Sector 115 substation caused outages in Sectors 122, 115, 73, and 75. A fault in the 33 kV line in Abhay Khand plunged parts of Indirapuram, Vaishali, and Vasundhara into darkness.

Satnarayan Goyal, president of the Sector 55 RWA, reported that a pole broke and fell on a house, smashing a window. In Sector 35, another pole of a high-tension line split in the middle. Devender Singh, a resident of Greater Noida West, said, “Many trees were uprooted between Sectors 71 and 121 in the thunderstorm.”

RC Gupta, RWA president of Sector 19, stated, “Branches have fallen on electric wires. Discom has switched off our power supply in the entire sector. It cannot be started until all the trees are removed and the electric wires are fixed. This may take a few hours. The Authority’s horticulture team was in Dadri and is expected to take a couple of hours to reach our sector. It looks like power will be restored only late at night.”

An executive engineer of the Noida power department explained, “Once the weather conditions improve, linesmen will check all 11 kV line feeders and clear the lines, after which supply will be restored. This can take some time and is necessary for residents’ safety.”

Earlier Outages and Resident Complaints

Earlier on Wednesday, sectors such as 20, 45, 49, 73, 75, 100, and 122 in Noida faced outages lasting two to three hours. Umesh Sharma from Sector 122 questioned, “The night temperature was quite high and I felt suffocated with no power at home. I have not had a good night’s sleep in over a week. How long will this continue?” Similar complaints were made by Amar Saini from Pandit Colony, Sector 73, and Ashwani Kumar from Sector 75, who reported no power until 2:56 AM on Thursday.

Shivam Tripathi, executive engineer of the Noida power department, informed that due to a breakdown in feeder number 4 from the Sector 115 substation, supply was affected in the area, including Sector 122. “The circuit jumper on the 33 kV feeder was found burnt. We shut down the connection to replace it,” said Tripathi.

Situation in Ghaziabad

In Ghaziabad, power department officials confirmed similar measures after the breakdown of the 33 kV line in several places. Residents of Gyan Khand and surrounding areas experienced severe power outages late into the night and throughout the morning. Hemant Kumar Behera from Gyan Khand said power disruption began around 5:19 PM on June 3, triggering a wave of complaints from residents across the community. Sanjeev Sharma from the Ghaziabad power department confirmed that a fault in the 33 kV line caused the outage, assuring that supply would be restored soon.
