Tirupati Encroachment Drive Sparks Political Clash Between TDP and YSRCP
Tirupati Encroachment Drive Sparks Political Clash

The Tirupati Municipal Corporation's clearance of encroachments along the Alipiri-Zoo park road, following directives from the district collector, has ignited a political confrontation between the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP). The drive, aimed at removing unauthorized structures in the ecologically sensitive Seshachalam buffer zone, has drawn sharp reactions from both sides.

Background of the Encroachment Issue

According to ruling party sources, several petitions were submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who also oversees the Environment and Forests portfolio. These petitions sought his intervention to protect the Seshachalam buffer zone, where numerous unauthorized eateries had sprung up in recent times. In response, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan directed Tirupati District Collector Dr. S. Venkateshwar to inspect the area and take necessary action.

Collector's Inspection and Municipal Action

Following the deputy CM's instructions, District Collector Dr. S. Venkateshwar visited the Alipiri-Zoo park road and ordered the Tirupati civic body to immediately clear all encroachments in the red zone adjacent to the Seshachalam biosphere. Acting swiftly, municipal authorities launched a special drive, dismantling all illegal structures along the road. The operation was carried out to restore the ecological balance and prevent further degradation of the buffer zone.

Political Reactions and Allegations

The encroachment clearance has sparked a war of words between the TDP and YSRCP. Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) Chairman Ravi Naidu, a TDP leader, defended the drive, stating that the intention was to free the ecologically sensitive zone from encroachments. He accused the YSRCP of launching baseless propaganda and leveling false allegations. "We have taken a serious note of the YSRCP’s false propaganda and have formally lodged a police complaint at the Tirupati West police station," Ravi Naidu told the Times of India.

YSRCP's Counterclaims

On the other hand, followers of YSRCP youth leader Bhumana Abhinay Reddy have alleged that the encroachment clearance drive was intended solely to protect the business interests of a few TDP local leaders. They claimed that commercial establishments owned by these leaders were set up close to Alipiri, and the drive was a targeted move to eliminate competition. The YSRCP has called for a probe into the matter, arguing that the operation was politically motivated.

Broader Implications

The clash highlights the ongoing political rivalry in Andhra Pradesh, with environmental issues becoming a new battleground. The Seshachalam biosphere, a UNESCO-listed site, is of significant ecological importance, and its protection is crucial for biodiversity. However, the politicization of the encroachment drive raises questions about the motives behind such actions. The police complaint filed by the TDP and the YSRCP's allegations suggest that the issue may escalate further, potentially leading to legal battles.

As the dust settles, the focus remains on the need for transparent and impartial enforcement of environmental laws. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges in balancing development and conservation in politically charged environments.
