A meeting of newly elected Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators, chaired by party supremo Mamata Banerjee at her Kolkata residence, was deferred on Monday after a significant majority of the party's MLAs failed to attend. Out of 80 MLAs, only 20 reached the venue, prompting the postponement.
Reason for Low Attendance
The TMC leadership explained that the legislators were occupied handling the aftermath of alleged attacks on senior leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. Additionally, they were dealing with protests and police actions against party workers across the state. The party has accused political rivals of orchestrating these incidents.
Party's Response
In response to the situation, the TMC has announced a series of statewide protest programmes. A sit-in demonstration led by Mamata Banerjee herself is planned to highlight the alleged attacks and police excesses. The party has called for unity among its ranks during this period.
BJP's Rebuttal
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has rejected the allegations of orchestrating the attacks on TMC leaders. BJP spokespersons have termed the accusations baseless and accused the TMC of playing the victim card to divert attention from internal issues.
The development comes amid heightened political tension in West Bengal, with both parties trading charges ahead of upcoming local body elections. The TMC has also demanded a thorough investigation into the incidents.
