Madurai: State government officials paid tribute to freedom fighter Viswanatha Das on his 140th birth anniversary on Tuesday. Madurai district collector P Akash, accompanied by other officials, offered floral tributes to his statue at the Viswanatha Das memorial house in Thirumangalam.

About Viswanatha Das

Viswanatha Das, a noted stage artist, was born to Subramani Pandithar and Gnanammal of Sivakasi in 1886. He later settled in Thirumangalam. Through his songs and dramas, he induced patriotic feelings among the public. He was imprisoned 29 times due to his activities for the Indian independence movement.

Legacy and Commemoration

The state government set up the memorial house to safeguard his legacy and has been celebrating his birth anniversary as a government function. The event underscores the continued recognition of his contributions to India's freedom struggle.
