Tripura Left Front Voices Apprehension Over ADC Election Safeguards
In Agartala, the Left Front has raised significant concerns regarding essential electoral protections for the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections. The coalition expressed deep apprehension over multiple issues that could potentially compromise the integrity and fairness of the voting process.
Doubts Over EVM Sourcing and VVPAT Implementation
Left Front chairman Manik Dey highlighted that opposition parties remain unconvinced by responses from election authorities during a recent all-party meeting. A primary concern revolves around the reported use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) sourced from another state. Dey questioned why 3,500 EVMs were brought from Madhya Pradesh for the ADC poll instead of utilizing existing machines within Tripura, raising suspicions about transparency and logistical decisions.
Furthermore, the Left Front reiterated its strong demand for the inclusion of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) systems alongside EVMs. They emphasized that the absence of a verifiable paper trail could significantly erode voter trust, as it prevents independent verification of votes cast, a critical component for ensuring electoral credibility.
Security Concerns and Central Forces Deployment
The opposition parties have pushed for the presence of central forces to guarantee fair conditions during the voting process. However, according to Dey, the election commission stated that Central Armed Police Forces would not be deployed for these elections. The Left Front disputed this stance, pointing to examples from other states where such forces have been utilized to maintain order and prevent malpractices.
Additional concerns were raised regarding security arrangements and access for polling agents. Dey also criticized the decision to forgo web-casting from polling stations, with the commission reportedly citing financial limitations as the reason.
