Kolkata witnessed two fatal road accidents over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and critical injuries to another. The incidents occurred in separate parts of the city within a span of 24 hours.
Monday's accident on Deshpran Sashmal Road
On Monday, a little after noon, 22-year-old Sathi Dutta, a passenger on an app-based bike taxi, lost her life on Deshpran Sashmal Road near MR Bangur Hospital. She was on her way to work when the accident occurred, according to police reports. Dutta was riding pillion when the bike rider attempted to overtake a bus that had stopped in the middle of the road to drop off a passenger. As the bike moved to overtake, it was struck from the left side by a heavy goods vehicle traveling in the same direction. The impact caused the rider to fall to the left, while Dutta fell to the right. Despite wearing a helmet, she sustained fatal head injuries when the truck's tire ran over her face. She was declared dead upon arrival at MR Bangur Hospital.
