Congress leader Rajmohan Unnithan has strongly criticized public demonstrations in support of chief ministerial hopefuls, calling them part of divisive tactics within the Kerala opposition. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Unnithan asserted that no MP or MLA from Kerala can claim that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has no right to comment on internal matters of the Congress party, as the IUML is an integral part of the United Democratic Front (UDF) coalition.
Unnithan's remarks on coalition dynamics
Unnithan emphasized that the IUML, being a key ally in the UDF, has every right to voice its opinions on Congress affairs. He stated, "None of the MPs or MLAs in Kerala can say that the League cannot comment about internal matters of the Congress as the IUML is part of team UDF." This comes amid growing tensions within the opposition over the selection of a chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.
Divisive tactics condemned
The Congress leader further condemned public rallies and demonstrations organized by supporters of various CM hopefuls, describing them as divisive strategies that undermine party unity. He urged party workers to focus on strengthening the coalition rather than engaging in factional displays. Unnithan's comments highlight the ongoing internal strife within the Congress-led UDF as it prepares for the 2026 assembly polls.
The remarks have sparked debate among political observers, with some viewing them as an attempt to assert Congress's leadership over its allies. Others see it as a reflection of deeper disagreements over the party's direction in Kerala. Unnithan, a former diplomat and veteran politician, has often been vocal about coalition discipline and the need for collective decision-making.
The IUML has traditionally been a strong ally of the Congress in Kerala, but recent disagreements over seat-sharing and candidate selection have tested the relationship. Unnithan's statement is seen as an effort to reaffirm the alliance's cohesion ahead of the elections.
