Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Greenlights Major Scheme to Honor Social Justice Pioneers
In a significant move viewed as strategic outreach to various communities, particularly Dalits and Other Backward Classes (OBCs), the Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday approved a comprehensive scheme to renovate and beautify statues and memorials dedicated to "icons of social justice" across all 403 assembly constituencies in the state. This initiative comes ahead of the crucial assembly elections scheduled for 2027.
Dr BR Ambedkar Murti Vikas Yojana: A Rs 403 Crore Commitment
Named the Dr BR Ambedkar Murti Vikas Yojana, the scheme will see an initial allocation of Rs 403 crore in its first phase. Under this ambitious program, ten existing monuments in each assembly constituency will be identified for beautification and renovation work. The timing of this announcement is particularly noteworthy as it aligns with the state's political calendar.
Minister for Social Welfare (Independent Charge) Asim Arun clarified that while the scheme bears Ambedkar's name, it encompasses memorials of numerous social reformers. "The scheme is not limited to Dalit icons alone," Arun emphasized. "It includes those who have worked tirelessly for social change, such as Sant Ravidas, Sant Kabir, Valmiki, and Jyotiba Phule."
Political Context and Historical References
Arun drew a sharp contrast with previous administrations, specifically targeting the Samajwadi Party government. He pointed out that the BJP is now paying respect to the same social justice icons who were allegedly insulted when former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav changed the names of districts, universities, and medical colleges that had been named after Dalit icons.
"Through this scheme, we are rectifying past disrespect and honoring the true contributors to social justice," Arun stated, framing the initiative as both corrective and celebratory.
Implementation Timeline and Structural Details
The scheme is set to be officially launched on April 14, coinciding with Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations. The government plans to organize programs across Uttar Pradesh to inform citizens about the new initiative. According to Arun, the first phase will specifically cover memorials and statues that were completed by December 31, 2025.
Financial Allocation and Infrastructure Improvements: Each statue or memorial will receive Rs 10 lakh for comprehensive work. This funding will cover not just the statues themselves but also surrounding infrastructure improvements including:
- Creation or renovation of boundary walls
- Installation of protective canopies
- Development of seating areas for visitors
- General beautification of the immediate surroundings
Selection Protocol and Broader Objectives
The government has established a clear protocol for identifying which memorials will receive attention under the scheme. The criteria include:
- Cultural icons who have made significant contributions to society
- Individuals who have worked extensively for social justice and equality
- Other great personalities whose legacy deserves preservation and celebration
Beyond mere preservation, the scheme aims to develop the areas surrounding these memorials and generate local employment opportunities. An official explained, "This initiative serves multiple purposes: safeguarding our historical memorials, developing surrounding infrastructure, creating jobs at the local level, and most importantly, providing the younger generation with tangible connections to learn about the contributions of these great personalities and draw inspiration from their lives."
The comprehensive approach suggests the government views these memorials not just as static monuments but as living educational resources and community spaces that can foster both historical awareness and economic development simultaneously.
