Yogi Adityanath slams SP, Congress over Bundelkhand's past

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress, accusing them of leaving Bundelkhand plagued by dacoits while failing to provide jobs to the youth. In contrast, he credited the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with transforming the region through development initiatives, including a defence corridor and employment opportunities.

'Remember, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress gave Bundelkhand dacoits. They did not provide jobs to the youth,' Adityanath said during a public event in the region. His remarks come as the BJP seeks to consolidate its hold in Bundelkhand, a historically backward area that has seen significant government investment in recent years.

BJP's development push in Bundelkhand

The Chief Minister highlighted the BJP government's efforts to boost economic activity in Bundelkhand, including the establishment of a defence corridor that runs through the region. 'The BJP brought jobs and a defence corridor,' he asserted, contrasting his party's record with that of previous administrations. According to government data, the defence corridor has attracted investments worth over ₹10,000 crore and is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

Adityanath also listed other initiatives, such as improved road connectivity, electrification, and water supply projects, that have been implemented under the BJP's rule. He claimed that the region's development trajectory has changed dramatically since the party came to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017.

Political context and upcoming elections

The attack on the SP and Congress comes ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, where Bundelkhand is expected to be a key battleground. The region has traditionally been a stronghold of the SP and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), but the BJP made inroads in the 2022 elections, winning 10 of the 19 seats in the Bundelkhand region.

Political analysts say that Adityanath's focus on law and order and development resonates with voters in Bundelkhand, which has long struggled with dacoity and underdevelopment. 'The Chief Minister is effectively using the narrative of transformation to counter the opposition's legacy of neglect,' said a local political commentator.

Opposition response

The Samajwadi Party and Congress have not yet formally responded to Adityanath's remarks. However, SP leaders have previously accused the BJP of exaggerating its achievements and failing to address the root causes of poverty and unemployment in the region. Congress spokespersons have also criticized the BJP for what they call 'selective development' that benefits only certain sections.

Despite these criticisms, the BJP appears confident about its performance in Bundelkhand. Party workers in the region have been mobilizing to highlight the government's work, including the construction of new roads, schools, and hospitals. The defence corridor, in particular, is being promoted as a flagship project that will transform the region's economy.

Historical context of dacoity in Bundelkhand

Bundelkhand has a long history of dacoity, with infamous bandits like Phoolan Devi and Man Singh operating in the region's ravines. The problem was exacerbated by poverty, lack of education, and weak law enforcement. In recent years, however, the BJP government has claimed a significant reduction in dacoit-related crimes, citing police reforms and development as key factors.

According to official records, the number of dacoity cases in Uttar Pradesh has declined by over 30% since 2017, with Bundelkhand seeing a similar trend. The government attributes this to better policing and improved economic opportunities, which have reduced the appeal of criminal activities among local youth.

As the political battle for Bundelkhand intensifies, both the ruling party and the opposition are expected to step up their campaigns, with development and security emerging as central themes.
