The Uttar Pradesh government is set to launch a statewide theatre campaign aimed at connecting young people with India's freedom movement, literary heritage, and historical legacy. The initiative, developed by the Bhartendu Natya Academy (BNA), will feature plays based on freedom fighters, national icons, and celebrated literary works, and will be performed across schools, universities, museums, auditoriums, tourism centres, martyr memorials, and heritage locations in all 75 districts of the state.
Proposed Plays and Themes
Among the proposed plays are adaptations of the novels "Anand Math" and "Maharaja Suheldev". Other performances will focus on prominent figures and events such as Rani Lakshmibai, the Kakori movement, the Revolt of 1857, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Veer Savarkar, and Bijli Pasi. Additionally, stage productions are planned around literary personalities including Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Agyeya, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Munshi Premchand, Jaishankar Prasad, Suryakant Tripathi "Nirala", and Bharatendu Harishchandra.
Timeline and Execution
The campaign will begin with research, script development, and artist selection in June 2026, followed by rehearsals in July 2026. The first major staging is planned in Lucknow in August 2026. Performances will then travel to educational institutions between August and November 2026, and subsequently to historical and cultural sites across the state until February 2027. The academy will invite theatre groups from Uttar Pradesh and other states, with a selection process to shortlist 15 to 20 productions for the campaign.
