UP Women Ministers Condemn Opposition for Blocking Women's Reservation Bill
In a strong condemnation of the failure of the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, women ministers of Uttar Pradesh have termed it an anti-women move by opposition parties that would deprive women of their constitutional rights. The ministers accused opposition parties of prioritizing dynastic politics over genuine women's empowerment, with BJP women leaders alleging that both the Samajwadi Party and Congress want only women from their own families to hold positions in Parliament and state assemblies.
Accusations of Dynastic Politics
Cabinet minister Baby Rani Maurya directly questioned Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav's motives, stating, "This shows that only Dimple Yadav and her family have the right to Parliament." The ministers claimed that the opposition's actions would have significant electoral consequences, as women voters across Uttar Pradesh are taking note of this betrayal of women's rights.
Contrasting Women's Progress Under Current Government
MLA Vijay Laxmi Gautam highlighted the progress women have made under the current administration, saying, "Today, the President of the country is a woman, and women are serving in many top positions, contributing to the nation's development. The amount of work the Prime Minister has done for women's welfare is unprecedented."
Opposition's Alleged Resistance to Women's Schemes
Minister Rajni Tiwari accused the Samajwadi Party of being uneasy with schemes designed for women's welfare, stating that the reservation would have helped realize the Prime Minister's vision of a strong India—something she claims the opposition does not want to see happen. "The women's reservation bill was a crucial step toward gender equality in political representation," Tiwari emphasized.
Broader Implications for Society
MLA Aditi Singh explained the broader societal implications, noting that "women's empowerment strengthens society and accelerates overall development, which the opposition and Akhilesh Yadav are unwilling to accept." The ministers collectively argued that blocking this bill represents a deliberate attempt to hinder women's progress in Indian politics.
The failure of the bill has sparked significant political debate in Uttar Pradesh, with women ministers vowing to make this a central issue in upcoming elections. They emphasized that the opposition's stance reveals their true priorities, which they claim are focused on preserving family political dynasties rather than advancing women's rights and representation in governance.
