US Radar Upgrade for Pakistan's F-16 Fleet Raises Indian Concerns
US Radar Upgrade for Pakistan's F-16 Fleet Worries India

The United States is proceeding with a radar upgrade program for Pakistan's F-16 fleet, a decision that is expected to heighten India's security concerns. The fleet comprises between 75 and 85 fighter jets. Under a $488 million deal, American defense major Northrop Grumman Systems Corp has been contracted to provide engineering and technical support for F-16 radar systems. This initiative is part of the United States Air Force's foreign military sales program for Pakistan and other beneficiary countries.

Contract Announced Amid Regional Tensions

The contract, announced in April 2026, comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region following India's Operation Sindoor, which involved missile strikes on Pakistani terror hubs and military assets, including air bases. The F-16 upgrade program also coincides with Pakistan hosting US and Iranian delegations in Islamabad for peace negotiations aimed at ending the West Asia conflict.

Timeline and Scope of Work

The radar upgrade work is expected to be completed by March 31, 2036. Besides Pakistan, the April 2026 contract involves military sales to countries including Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Korea, Oman, Poland, and Turkey.

India's Concerns

India is likely to view the F-16 upgrade plan with concern, particularly as the Indian Air Force's aircraft squadron numbers have dipped to an alarming 29, well below the minimum sanctioned strength of 42 required to fight a two-front war with China and Pakistan.

Previous US Notification

This development comes months after a separate US notification in December 2025, when the Defense Security Cooperation Agency informed Congress of a proposed $686 million package to upgrade and support Pakistan's F-16 fleet.
