Usha Vance Set to Make Historic Birth as Vice President's Spouse
Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, is poised to make American political history by becoming the first person to give birth while her husband serves as Vice President since the 1870s. The Vances are expecting a baby boy in July, which will be their fourth child. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Usha revealed that she was completely unaware of this historical statistic before becoming pregnant.
Breaking Barriers Without Feeling the Pressure
Usha Vance emphasized that she has never felt burdened by the pressure of being a "first" in any context. Notably, she is also the first second lady to practice Hinduism, adding another layer of diversity to her role. She approaches these milestones with a grounded perspective, focusing on her personal journey rather than the historical significance.
Reflecting on her current pregnancy compared to her previous three, Usha highlighted the distinct differences in her daily life. "My last pregnancy, there were a lot of sweat pants," she recalled. "I was working from home — you know, sometimes put a blazer on over what was under." Now, as the second lady, she finds herself dressing up more frequently for official duties and public appearances, which has transformed her pregnancy experience.
The Decision to Expand Their Family
The journey to this fourth pregnancy involved some persuasion from Vice President JD Vance. He recently shared an anecdote about their decision-making process. "I remember when we decided to run for vice president, I said, 'Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid.' And she said, 'Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby,'" the Vice President recounted humorously. "But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both."
Usha acknowledged her husband's persuasive nature but clarified that she had never completely ruled out the possibility of another child. She explained her evolving perspective on family size. "I grew up in a family of two. And I thought that was a great number. And then I had two kids, and I thought — I didn’t feel quite done, right?" she said. "So I really wanted to have a third child."
After welcoming their third child, Usha and her family felt content and complete. However, she kept an open mind about further expansion. "We have our daughter, who’s amazing, and it was great. And so I just wasn’t sure," she admitted. "But as time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more, kind of, excited about that possibility."
Ultimately, Usha embraced the opportunity. "And so if there was a chance, I should take it, and I knew that I’d be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I’d be happy if we had four. And so here we are." She has one sister named Shreya, which influenced her initial views on family dynamics.
Launching a Children's Podcast with Family Involvement
Amidst her pregnancy and public duties, Usha Vance is also venturing into the world of media by launching a podcast specifically designed for children. She shared that her own children played a crucial role in this creative project, actively assisting with the design and decor of her podcast studio. This family collaboration adds a personal touch to her new endeavor, blending her professional interests with her role as a mother.
Usha Vance's story intertwines personal milestones with historical significance, showcasing her unique journey as a modern second lady. From navigating pregnancy in the public eye to making decisions about family size and launching a children's podcast, she continues to break barriers while maintaining a relatable and authentic presence.
