Veerapur Village Sees Outrage After Portraits of National Leaders Defaced with Dung
Tension gripped Veerapur village in Kukanur taluk, Koppal district, following a disturbing incident where unidentified miscreants desecrated portraits of prominent national leaders, including Dr BR Ambedkar and Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram, by hurling dung on them. The incident, which came to light on Thursday morning, has triggered widespread outrage and protests among the local community.
Portraits at Ambedkar Circle Vandalized
The Ambedkar Circle in Veerapur features portraits of several eminent personalities, such as social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Shahu Maharaj. In this shocking act of vandalism, all the portraits around the circle were found defaced, with dung smeared on them. This blatant disrespect towards revered figures has led to intense anger and frustration among villagers, who view it as an attack on their cultural and social values.
Villagers Protest and Demand Immediate Action
In response to the incident, villagers staged a protest, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits. They called for stringent legal action, including externment, to ensure such acts are not repeated. The protesters also urged key officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, and the local MLA, to visit the village and take strict measures to address the situation.
Police Investigation and Official Response
Police from Kukanur rushed to the spot promptly and initiated a thorough investigation. PSI SP Nayak of Kukanur police station and tahsildar Basavaraj Benne Shirur visited the site to assess the situation. They assured the public that a comprehensive probe is underway and that appropriate legal action will be taken against those responsible. Additionally, they stated that measures would be implemented to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Dalit Organizations Submit Memorandum
Later, leaders of Dalit organizations submitted a formal memorandum to the authorities, reiterating the demand for immediate arrests and stringent legal action against the miscreants. Prominent Dalit leaders present at the scene included Galeppa Doddamani, Ningaraj Benakal, Prakash Veerapur, and Basavaraj Nadavalamani. Their involvement underscores the community's collective call for justice and security in the wake of this provocative act.
The incident has highlighted ongoing tensions in the region, with authorities now under pressure to resolve the case swiftly and restore peace in Veerapur village.
