The Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) on Tuesday arrested an RTPS clerk posted at the Bettiah circle office in West Champaran district while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.
The accused, Raj Kumar Mishra, had allegedly been demanding the money from a complainant for the past six months to unlock a land 'jamabandi' (record of rights).
According to the complainant, repeated demands for the bribe forced him to approach the VIB and lodge a formal complaint.
Following the complaint, vigilance officials conducted a verification exercise and found the allegations to be genuine. A trap was subsequently laid, and Mishra was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting the bribe amount at the RTPS counter of the Bettiah circle office.
The arrest created a stir at the office as news of the vigilance action spread.
Vigilance DSP Shyam Kumar Prasad said, "A complaint was received alleging that Raj Kumar Mishra, a clerk working at the RTPS counter of Bettiah Circle Office, had demanded a bribe for unlocking a jamabandi. After verification of the complaint, the team carried out a trap operation and arrested the accused from the office premises while accepting Rs 15,000 as bribe."
The accused was taken into custody for interrogation, and further legal proceedings are under way.
