TVK President Demands Emergency Measures as Transport Disruptions Strand Voters
On polling day in Tamil Nadu, TVK president C Joseph Vijay made an urgent appeal to the Election Commission of India (ECI), calling for voting hours to be extended by two hours. This request came in response to widespread transport disruptions and painfully slow polling processes that left countless voters stranded and queues crawling at a snail's pace across various parts of the state.
Letter to Chief Election Commissioner Highlights Critical Failures
In a formal letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner, Vijay detailed a crisis scenario. He reported that thousands of voters were completely unable to reach their designated polling booths. This was primarily due to a critical shortage of buses at major terminals in Chennai and other key locations throughout Tamil Nadu.
The transport collapse was most acute at the Koyambedu, Kilambakkam, and Madhavaram bus stands. Vijay explained that voters traveling from within the state, from other Indian states, and even from abroad found themselves without any means of transportation after buses were abruptly diverted for election duty.
Allegations of Intentional Misplanning and Constitutional Violation
Flagging what he described as serious administrative lapses, Vijay did not mince words. He alleged that the chaotic situation "seems an intentional attempt at misplanning by the State Transport Corporation and administration." He went further, characterizing this failure as "an outright assault on the fundamental right to vote guaranteed under the Constitution of India."
Vijay warned that this systemic failure possessed the dangerous potential to effectively disenfranchise a significant portion of the electorate. He emphasized that such a breakdown directly undermines the conduct of free and fair elections, a principle safeguarded under Article 324 of the Constitution.
Immediate Interventions Demanded: Transport and Polling Efficiency
Seeking the ECI's immediate intervention, Vijay outlined a two-pronged solution. First, he urgently requested the deployment of emergency public transport. He argued that "This extension is well within the Commission’s powers and has been exercised in the past for far lesser disruptions." Vijay concluded his letter with a stark warning, stating, "The Election Commission cannot remain a mute spectator while thousands are denied their constitutional right on polling day."
He cautioned that any inaction from the ECI could lead to suppressed voter turnout and severely damage public faith in the integrity of the electoral process.
