Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Amarinder Raja Warring on Saturday broke his silence over the ongoing infighting within the Punjab Congress, addressing speculations of internal divisions. Warring referred to former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi as his 'elder brother' and dismissed claims of factionalism, asserting that the party remains united.
Warring's Statement on Party Unity
Speaking to the media, Warring stated, 'Channi sahib is our elder brother, a senior leader and former Chief Minister. If some Congress leaders meet at his house, there is nothing wrong with that. Tomorrow, leaders may gather at my residence or at Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa’s home as well. That should not be interpreted as infighting.' He emphasized that such meetings are routine and do not indicate any rift within the party.
Warring categorically rejected speculation about internal divisions, saying, 'There is no factionalism in the Punjab Congress.' He expressed confidence that all senior leaders would appear together on a common stage within the next one or two days, signaling unity.
No Action Against Channi or Other Leaders
The PPCC chief clarified that neither Channi nor any other senior leader had acted against party interests. However, he warned that strict action would be taken against former MLAs or leaders found making statements against the party or indulging in indiscipline. 'Strict action would be taken against those former MLAs or leaders found making statements against the party or indulging in indiscipline,' Warring said.
Background of the Infighting
The comments come amid reports of a rift within the Punjab Congress, with some leaders reportedly holding meetings at Channi's residence, fueling speculation of a faction opposed to Warring's leadership. The party has been grappling with internal dissent since its defeat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, with senior leaders often airing grievances publicly.
Warring's statement aims to quell such narratives and project a united front ahead of future electoral battles. The Punjab Congress is expected to contest the upcoming local body elections and the 2027 Assembly elections, making internal cohesion critical.
