Worker dies in trench cave-in in Karnataka, contractor booked

A 35-year-old worker died after a trench caved in at a construction site in Karnataka on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the city of Mysuru, where the work was sanctioned by the local civic body and executed by a private contractor, police said.

Details of the Incident

The victim, identified as Ramesh, was digging a trench for a drainage project when the soil suddenly collapsed, burying him under debris. Fellow workers alerted authorities, and a rescue team arrived at the scene within 30 minutes. However, by the time Ramesh was extricated, he had succumbed to injuries and suffocation. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

According to police, the trench was about 8 feet deep and lacked proper safety measures such as shoring or sloping to prevent collapses. An investigation has been launched to determine if safety protocols were violated.

Contractor Booked

Mysuru police have registered a case against the contractor, identified as Suresh Kumar, under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. The contractor has been summoned for questioning. “We are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. The contractor will be held accountable if negligence is proven,” said a police officer.

The civic body, Mysuru City Corporation, stated that the project was awarded to the contractor following a tendering process. Officials said they would review safety compliance in all ongoing projects.

Impact and Aftermath

The death has sparked protests from local labor unions, who demanded compensation for the worker’s family and stricter enforcement of safety norms. The corporation has promised an ex gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the next of kin. The contractor’s license may be suspended pending the inquiry.

This incident highlights the persistent issue of workplace safety in India’s construction sector, where inadequate precautions often lead to fatalities. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, over 2,000 construction workers died in accidents in 2024, with cave-ins being a leading cause.
